A co-packer (or contract packer) is a business that manufactures (processes and packages) a recipe for another business. Food companies use co-packers for many reasons, including to grow or “scale” quickly, to avoid brick and mortar costs, or to have their products made closer to their markets.

In general,

  • Some co-packers will help with product formulation, research and development, ingredient sourcing, labeling, certifications, distribution, and marketing.
  • Co-packer relationships and agreements are very important. Consider obtaining legal advice before you enter into any agreements or contracts.
  • Finding a co-packer to make small batches of product can be difficult.
