The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has concluded a special registration review of insecticides used to control bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) in Minnesota. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United States Department of Agriculture all consider bed bugs a public health pest. Unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread diseases. Controlling bed bugs takes time and patience. In addition to non-chemical approaches there are several pesticides (insecticides) available for bed bug control. The MDA review assembled information on bed bug insecticide treatment options, insecticide safety, common reasons for failure of chemical control and reporting of pesticide disposal, spill and misuse. The MDA does not endorse specific products or companies but instead discusses various insecticides registered for bed bug control in Minnesota.
