The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is seeking 11 members to serve two-year terms on the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group (EFWG). Minnesotans interested in enhancing opportunities for new and emerging farmers to start or sustain an agricultural business are encouraged to apply by Monday, Sept. 14.

“The goal of the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group is to ensure that the experiences and ideas of farmers from across Minnesota help shape the resources indended to serve them,” said Assistant MDA Commissioner Patrice Bailey. “As we continue to build out our Emerging Farmers Office and its programs, the group’s guidance will be essential to meeting farmers where they are. We are grateful to past and departing members, whose perspectives have shaped this work and strengthened support for emerging farmers across the state.”

Established by the Minnesota Legislature in 2020 under the Walz-Flanagan Administration, the EFWG was the first state-level advisory group of its kind in the nation. Since then, 62 members representing 32 Minnesota counties have served across six cohorts, helping ensure that emerging farmers have a voice in shaping state programs, policies, and resources.

The MDA welcomes applications for the seventh cohort from anyone interested in serving and is particularly seeking the perspective of farmers or aspiring farmers who are:

  • Women
  • Veterans
  • People with disabilities
  • American Indian and Alaska Natives
  • Members of communities of color
  • Members of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • 35 years old or younger
  • Living in urban areas with populations of 5,000 or more

Members will serve from November 2026 through May 2028. Meetings are held in person or virtually. Members may choose to receive a stipend for their service. Applications for the EFWG must be submitted by 11 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14. Visit the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group webpage to apply and learn more. Questions may be directed to the Emerging Farmer Office at mda.emerging.farmers@state.mn.us.
