Session 1 of this four-part series is “Capper-Volstead Essentials: Legal Foundations for Startup Farmer Cooperatives.”

This initial session covers the fundamentals of the Capper-Volstead Act—the federal law that gives farmer cooperatives essential legal protection and levels the playing field so that they can market their goods together and compete. Whether you're forming a new co-op or strengthening an existing one, this session will cover what Capper-Volstead protection means in practice, address related legal considerations for agricultural cooperatives, and include plenty of time for your questions.

Session 1 Presenter: Jack Huerter, Cooperative Attorney, Dorsey & Whitney, LLP.

Cooperative Development Services (CDS) is offering this free virtual training series on topics highly relevant to early stage producer co-ops and led by experienced professionals with deep cooperative experience. Co-ops are encouraged to send multiple participants.

The training is made possible through the Minnesota Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure program, which is funded by a cooperative agreement between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). The contents of the training and other program materials are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA or MDA.
