Minnesota farmers are facing several challenges, from drought to dairy supply chain issues, that can put a financial strain on the family. However, producers can find help through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Farm Advocate Program.

Trained advisors, or advocates, offer one-on-one assistance and advice to farmers facing crises caused by natural disasters or financial problems. There is no charge or fee for the assistance.

“If you are struggling in your farm operation for whatever reasons and are not sure of what to do, feel free to call one of our Farm Advocates to arrange a visit,” said Minnesota Farm Advocate Bruce Lubitz. “Advocates will come to your farm and help you analyze any potential problems and provide suggestions and assistance on remedying them. All visits are free and confidential.”

Farm Advocates can provide help with financial planning and lender negotiations. They are also able to provide referrals and assistance with federal and state farm programs, legal service, and social and human services.

“Our Farm Advocates can provide farmers with an entire network of professional help,” said Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “Attorneys, accountants, human service professionals, educators, and government officials all work with the program to help Advocates help producers make informed decisions. This is an important program, and we want Minnesota farmers to know they’re not alone when facing difficult times.”

The Farm Advocate Program has been supported by the MDA since 1984 and was born out of the 1980s farm crisis. Advocates have helped hundreds of farmers over the decades.

Minnesota Grown and the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) announce the start of the 2023 Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year contest, an annual statewide contest to recognize retail grocery and liquor stores that offer products from Minnesota Grown farmers and producers, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, packaged goods, wine, cider, beer, and spirits.

“We’re proud to collaborate with and celebrate the grocers that are so crucial in getting local foods in the hands of consumers,” says Rachel Wandrei, marketing manager for Minnesota Grown. “Minnesotans love the quality and freshness of local food as well as supporting the farmers in their community. Making local products available to consumers where they regularly shop — at their neighborhood store — is a significant contribution that grocers and their employees make to their communities.”

The contest period kicks off August 1 and runs through September 29, a time when local farms have a wide variety and abundant volume of products to offer. Each retailer chooses a one-week showcase during the contest period for a focused promotional effort in their store and other related marketing activities. Upon contest completion, regional awards are given as well as a “People’s Choice” photo contest winner determined through social media votes.

Award judging criteria includes:

  • Number of Minnesota Grown farms and products for sale
  • Use of the Minnesota Grown logo in innovative promotional displays and experiences
  • Social media, print, and other marketing activities highlighting Minnesota Grown products

A recent consumer survey showed that 80% of consumers recognize the Minnesota Grown brand and associate it with freshness, quality, community, and health. By participating in the contest, retailers can boost sales while giving their customers access to quality local products. Participating stores also value building relationships with farmers in their community and engaging their employees in creative ways to promote fresh, nutritious, locally grown foods.

“We encourage shoppers to look for the Minnesota Grown logo over the next few months and use their buying power to support local farms and the retail stores that carry local products,” Wandrei adds.

“Grocers are the foundation of the communities they serve and are incredibly proud of our innovative local partnerships from farm to fork,” said MGA President Jamie Pfuhl. “The Minnesota Grown program is driven by the exceptional efforts of all in the food industry. We are proud to play a role in this collective effort that showcases and celebrates innovative partnerships and brings wonderful local products to our customers.”

For more information, visit the Retailer of the Year contest webpage. Retailer entries must be received by Friday, October 13, 2023, through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s online grants portal.

Contact Jennifer Alexander at jennifer.j.alexander@state.mn.us with any questions about the contest or submission process.

Applications are now open for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Soil Health Financial Assistance Grants.

These grants are available to individual producers, producer groups, and local governments to purchase or retrofit soil health equipment. Grant awards will provide up to 50% cost-share, with a minimum award of $500 and a maximum award of $50,000. The 2023 Legislature appropriated $2.375 million for this round of grants.

“Good soil health is important to water quality and our other natural resources in Minnesota,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “It’s important to recognize the financial hurdles farmers face when trying to implement soil health practices because of specialized, expensive equipment and machinery. The Soil Health Financial Assistance Grants will help offset equipment costs, helping to expand the number of Minnesota farmers and acres engaged in soil health activities.”

Examples of eligible new or used equipment include, but are not limited to, no-till drills, air seeders, retrofit projects to allow no-till planting, and more. Parts and materials used to retrofit existing equipment are also eligible.

The Request for Proposals and application link can be found at www.mda.state.mn.us/soil-health-grant. Applications are due September 15, 2023. Awards will be announced by January 1, 2024.

This is the first full round of Soil Health Financial Assistance Grants. A pilot program earlier this year awarded $475,000 to 16 individuals and organizations across 15 counties. No-till drills and air seeders were among the most requested pieces of equipment. The pilot program received more than 230 applications for more than $6.5 million – over 13 times the funding available.

Farmers’ markets across Minnesota will be celebrating National Farmers’ Market Week from August 6-12, 2023; a time when produce in the state is at its most abundant. The week will culminate in a public event on Saturday, August 12, at the Winona Farmers’ Market in honor of its 50th anniversary.

“Farmers’ markets play a vital role in Minnesota’s local food system, helping connect consumers with fresh, local, and nutritious foods in their communities,” said Minnesota Department of Agriculture Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey. “The Minnesota Department of Agriculture thanks those who make these markets possible, and we look forward to celebrating their hard work and contributions during National Farmers’ Market Week.”

Activities at the Winona celebration event will include shopping at over 30 market vendors, live music, arts activities for all ages by River Arts Alliance, a cooking demonstration by Inga Witscher of “Around the Farm Table” at 10 a.m., and presentations from dignitaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. Throughout the week, a social media photo contest will spotlight the farmers, vendors, and marketgoers that make up the vibrant market community.

The theme of this year’s event is “Farmers’ markets are leading the way! Community, Culture, Land.” Agriculture is a foundation of Minnesota's economy, and a record number of 375 farmers’ markets are currently located in all corners of the state.

“During National Farmers' Market Week, we take the opportunity to celebrate and extend our heartfelt appreciation to the exceptional individuals who drive the success of farmers' markets — from the dedicated farmers, food entrepreneurs, crafters, and market organizers to the unwavering support of our loyal customers,” said Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association Executive Director Kathy Zeman. “In Minnesota, farmers' markets proudly lead the way in strengthening the local foodshed, sustainable land practices, and fostering a strong sense of community. These markets are not just about transactions; they are about cultivating meaningful relationships between farmers and customers, nurturing a thriving local food ecosystem, fostering connections among friends and new acquaintances, and ensuring that everyone has access to wholesome, locally grown food."

Sandy Dietz of Whitewater Gardens Farm in Altura, Minnesota, is a vendor at the Winona Farmers’ Market and a farmer member of Land Stewardship Project. She says, "Farmers' markets are a crucial part of our community and supporting our local farmers. For many, these markets are our main source of income, and they are an important way to get fresh, healthy food to our communities and support a resilient food system."

“Farmers’ markets are important community assets. When you shop at a farmers’ market, you are not only supporting family farmers who live in your community, but you’re also supporting your community by keeping dollars local,” said Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish. “In addition, food bought directly from farmers is fresher and tastes better.”

National Farmers’ Market Week is a yearly celebration sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which highlights the value markets bring to communities and the important role they play in the U.S. food system. Each year, farmers’ markets across Minnesota participate in the event by creating their own independent celebrations. This event is being presented in partnership by the Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association, Minnesota Grown, Minnesota Farmers Union, and Land Stewardship Project.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is now accepting applications for the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Livestock Investment Grant. This annual grant opportunity is open to Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers looking to improve their operations, supporting long-term development in Minnesota’s $8 billion livestock industry.

The MDA anticipates awarding approximately $1.5 million in fiscal year 2024 for Livestock Investment Grants using a competitive review process. Grant funds are available for equipment purchases and physical improvements used to help start, improve, or expand livestock operations in Minnesota. Reimbursable investments include but are not limited to buildings or facilities for producing livestock, watering systems, fencing, feed equipment, and waste management equipment used for raising livestock.

All principal operators of livestock farms in Minnesota are invited to apply, including those who have received grants in the past. Only one application will be accepted per farm. Preference will be given to applicants or farms that have not previously been awarded a grant.

Applicants may apply for up to 10% of their project’s total cost, with a minimum expense of $4,000 and a maximum expense of $250,000. Grant awards can range in size from $400 to $25,000. Only expenses incurred after the grant contract has been signed by all parties are eligible for reimbursement. The MDA expects to have contracts to grantees by early 2024.

Applications for the grant will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Applicants must use the MDA’s online application portal to apply for the grant.

The MDA is hosting two virtual public input sessions where people can share their ideas directly, in addition to an online form for written submissions open through September 1, 2023.

The two sessions will take place on Zoom. Participation is free, but registration is required. The sessions are scheduled for:

  • Monday, August 21, 2023, from Noon – 1 p.m. Register for this event.
  • Tuesday, August 22, 2023, from 5 – 6 p.m. Register for this event.

The next legislative session begins February 12, 2024, where the MDA may bring forward proposals to change state law. The Governor and Legislature set a two-year budget in the 2023 session and may consider other additions or revisions in the 2024 session.

Information about the MDA’s mission, leadership, and responsibilities is available on our website.
