In 2024, 134 metolachlor (57 metolachlor and 77 S-metolachlor) containing products were registered for sale in Minnesota. S-metolachlor is a more active form of the herbicide. Examples of metolachlor products are listed in Table 1. Thirty-seven were metolachlor-only products and 97 were "pre-mix" combination products of metolachlor and other herbicides (Table 2). Not all metolachlor products registered for sale in Minnesota are purchased by consumers each year. For example, in 2017, sales were reported on 60 of the 113 products registered.

Concentration of metolachlor in 2017 registered products range from 16% to 87.3%. This is referred to as the active ingredient, or a.i., of a metolachlor product.

Minnesota registration information for metolachlor and other pesticide products is available through the Kelly Registration Systems or the National Pesticide Information Retrieval System. Examples of metolachlor product labels are available through the Crop Data Management Systems (CDMS). Note that pesticide product labels change over time. The only official product label is the label attached to the container of the pesticide being used.

The MDA collects pesticide sales data to provide long-term trends in pesticide use. Sales data should not be used as an indicator of pesticide use in a given year as product bought one year may be held over and used the following year or may be returned unused to the distributor.

In 2017, over 3.5 million pounds of metolachlor’s active ingredient was sold in Minnesota (Figure 1). Fifty-nine percent of metolachlor sold in 2017 was metolachlor-only products and 41% was pre-mix combination products of metolachlor and another herbicide or herbicides.

Notes:

  1. If a metolachlor-only product is combined with a Restricted Use Pesticide such as atrazine, the combined product has Restricted Use Pesticide status.
  2. Not all metolachlor products registered for sale in Minnesota are being purchased. For example, in 2017, 113 metolachlor products were registered for sale in Minnesota, but only 60 were sold.
  3. Information on pesticide products registered for use in Minnesota can be obtained from Kelly Registration Systems or the National Pesticide Information Retrieval System.
