How to Apply for a Wolf-Livestock Conflict Prevention Grant

  • The Wolf-Livestock Conflict Prevention Grant, offered by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), helps livestock producers prevent wolf depredation.
  • When grant funding is available, the Department will begin accepting applications in early October. The deadline for submitting applications is typically in early January and selected projects may begin in April.
  • Grantees must use their own funds to make purchases related to the grant and then submit documentation of those expenses to the Department for reimbursement. Generally, a 20% cost-share is required from the grantee. For example, if a documented project expense was $1,000, the Department will pay the grantee $800.
  • Grant dollars cannot reimburse costs that occur before a grant agreement is established with the Department. Grant dollars can only be used to reimburse costs made after a grant agreement is established with the Department.
  • To be eligible for a grant, applicants must be livestock producers within Minnesota’s wolf range or have documented wolf depredation. Receiving a grant does not affect an applicant’s continued eligibility for depredation compensation payments. Eligible projects may include:
    • Purchase of guard animals and/or veterinary care for new or existing guard animals
    • Fencing, cattle panels, or other barriers
      • Fencing must be adequate to prevent entry to wolves, this means woven wire on the bottom portion and a total height of at least 54 inches.
    • Calving, lambing, or other shelters
      • The MDA does not provide funding for sheds or other large, expensive structures.
    • Lights, alarms, or other wolf deterrents
  • We are not currently accepting applications for this grant.
