The Minnesota Down Payment Assistance Grant offers up to $20,000 for qualified farmers to purchase their first farm. The MDA will award these grants using a random lottery process with priority given to eligible applicants as described below. Applications are open on this webpage from July 6, 2026 until 11:59 p.m. Central Time (CT) on August 31, 2026.

Information Session
On Tuesay, July 7, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. the MDA will host a virtual information session to share details about the grant program, link below. A recording will be posted on this webpage when it is available.

Am I Eligible?
Eligible Applicants
- Individual (LLCs, partnerships, etc. must apply and buy farm as individual)
- Minnesota resident
- Demonstrate knowledge of the type of farming they intend to do through one or more of the following - new
- $1,000 or more in past farm income,
- completion of an approved Farm Business Management program,
- a two-or-four-year degree in an agriculture-related field, or
- at least three years of verified farm management work experience on a comparable farm.
- Earn less than $250,000 annually in gross agricultural sales
- Applicants and their spouses have never owned a farm
- Cannot buy farm from a direct family member
- Will provide the majority of labor and management on the farm
- Will commercially farm the land for at least 5 years
- In good standing with the State of Minnesota
- Have not been convicted of a crime related to a state grant agreement
Priority Applicants
- Earn less than $100,000 annually in gross agricultural sales, or
- Produce one or more of the following crops: industrial hemp, cannabis, specialty crops (fruits, vegetables, and other horticultural crops) as defined by the USDA
Eligible Purchases
- Farmland or other agricultural real estate (tillable acres, hog barn, commercial greenhouse, etc.)
- Within the borders of Minnesota
- Must close on purchase after application approval and within designated timeframe. This grant cannot be applied retroactively toward purchases that have already closed.
