The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has funds available to support rural groups and organizations that want to offer safeTALK: Preventing Suicide in Agricultural Communities training for farmers, farm family members, and/or other professionals whose work involves farmers and agriculture (e.g. federal/state/county agencies, lenders, accountants, veterinarians, ag-oriented businesses like feed and implement dealers, agronomists, clergy, health and mental health providers).

Read about safeTALK in the Farmer

This four-hour training teaches how to recognize someone having thoughts of suicide, how to engage them, and how to make sure they get help. It is a popular program; when we evaluated nine sessions across Minnesota, 85 percent of respondents said they would “strongly recommend” the training to colleagues or co-workers. Sessions can accommodate a maximum of 30 participants.

The MDA will provide partial event sponsorships up to $500; there is currently a total of $5,000 available.

As you plan your event, we’ll also be happy to share things we have learned while hosting this training. For example, we strongly encourage you charge a participant registration fee in addition to identifying other sources of funding.
