Minnesota Organic Conference organizers have announced the 2019 conference keynote speakers for January 10 and 11, 2019. Chef Sean Sherman will present “The (R)evolution of Indigenous Food Systems of North America” on January 10. Farmer and registered dietician Mary Jo Forbord will present “Organic Food from Minnesota: Our Roots and Future” on January 11.
Sean Sherman, a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, is an internationally renowned chef and indigenous foods scholar. Sherman’s main culinary focus is to bring back a sense of Native American cuisine to today’s world—revitalizing indigenous foods systems in a modern context. In 2018, Sherman’s first book, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, won the James Beard medal for Best American Cookbook. His entrepreneurial ventures include The Sioux Chef, a catering and food education business, and the Tatanka Truck, a food truck that features pre-contact foods of the Dakota and Minnesota territories.
Sherman was recently awarded a Bush Fellowship to research, cultivate, and share indigenous food systems. With his team, he also created a nonprofit, North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems, to work on strengthening communities and creating opportunities through indigenous food.
Mary Jo Forbord is a fifth generation farmer, a registered dietician, and co-owner of Prairie Horizons Farm. Her farm encompasses 480 acres of original native prairie and diverse, perennial, certified organic pastures in southern Pope County, Minnesota. Forbord’s mission is to operate a farm-based system of healthy and diverse food production, processing, and distribution that is economically sound, environmentally responsible, and life-enhancing for future generations. Today, Prairie Horizons markets beef, fruit, and vegetables directly to customers.
Registration for the conference is now open. Early Bird registration closes December 28, 2018. For more information, including conference updates, visit Minnesota Organic Conference or call Cassie Dahl at 651-201-6134.
