Increase the availability of and access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, for underserved communities in low and moderate income areas. Grants are intended to assist technical assistance providers in working with new or existing for-profit, not-for-profit, and cooperative self-service retail food establishments with needs-based assistance.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible Technical Assistance Recipients

Grocers and small food retailers receiving technical assistance under this grant must be located in underserved communities or must serve primarily underserved communities in low-income and moderate income areas. A list of eligible areas is available on the Good Food Access Program Eligible Areas page. Recipients of technical assistance must agree to abide by conditions as listed in the RFP.

What’s Eligible and Amount Available

The MDA anticipates awarding approximately $135,000 through the GFAP Technical Assistance Grant. Up to 75% of the total project cost may be covered by the grant. The maximum grant award is $75,000; minimum grant award is $5,000. Eligible expenses include costs associated with providing appropriate technical assistance to eligible recipients. See the RFP below for more detail.

In addition, technical assistance providers may request up to 5% or $2,500, whichever is less, of the total project costs to be used to increase institutional knowledge that is directly related to the assistance that will be provided to technical assistance recipients.

An additional $135,000 will be available this spring for grocers and small food retailers looking to purchase equipment and make physical improvements through the GFAP Equipment and Physical Improvement Grant.
