Early Detection
Sweeping a field for pests

New and emerging invasive pests are detected soon after their arrival by field surveys, response to phone calls, and inspections.

  • Field Surveys are done on pests that put Minnesota's economy, environment, and plant or human health at risk. Survey results can provide us with early information about the pests that are new and emerging in our state. We also cooperate with local, state, and federal groups on surveys.

    Some of our surveys include:
  • Inspection - Nursery inspections are done by the Nursery Inspection and Certification Program so customers can be sure the plants they buy are free of harmful plant pests. Other industries that handle plants or plant products, such as firewood or lumber mills, can also be inspected.
  • Education - Public knowledge is the first step in early detection of invasive pests.
  • Risk Modeling - Regional pest risk modeling can help us find out the chance that a pest could be introduced here.
    • EAB Risk Model (PDF: 10.5 MB / 11 pages)
    • Innovative Detection - Swimming pools can be used to detect new invasive insects
