Governor Dayton proclaims August 7-13 as Farmers Market Week

Kick-off event is Saturday at the St. Paul Farmers Market

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed August 7 – 13, 2011 as Farmers Market Week in Minnesota.  Minnesota is one of several states joining the U.S. Department of Agriculture in celebrating the benefits of farmers markets and the agricultural products farmers provide.  More than 150 farmers markets in Minnesota offer farm-fresh, healthful products and provide an important opportunity for consumers and farmers to interact.

Minnesota consumers are invited to attend the kick-off to Farmers Market Week this Saturday, August 6, at the downtown St. Paul Farmers Market.  The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is sponsoring a “Name that Produce” contest in which Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson will compete against Minnesota Grown spokesperson and U.S. Olympian Carrie Tollefson to see who can most quickly and accurately identify all the contents of a box of produce.  Members of the public will also be called on to join the competition.

The “Name that Produce” contest will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 6, at the downtown St. Paul Farmers Market located at 290 East 5th Street.

Many farmers markets throughout the state are hosting special events and giving out prizes during Farmers Market Week.  Contact your local farmers market to find out more or find farmers market locations at www.minnesotagrown.com.
