Minnesota Grown sponsors “Bison 101” class

Interest in raising bison is on the rise

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Nationwide demand for bison meat is outstripping the supply, prompting increased interest in raising bison as alternative livestock.  The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Minnesota Grown Program is offering a free educational event in Albany, Minn., next month where farmers and producers can learn how to start a buffalo herd.

Minnesota Buffalo Association Vice President Dale Rengstorf says the class is designed for both those considering raising bison and seasoned producers.

“About 95 percent of those raising bison in Minnesota are also carrying out other farm activities and/or holding down a day job,” said Rengstorf.  “That’s because bison are easier to raise than other livestock – they are extremely hardy and can thrive in most landscapes.”

The “Bison 101” class will be held Friday, November 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Central Livestock Sales Barn in Albany, 34412 County Road 10 - just off of Interstate 94 west of St. Cloud at exit 147.  The following day, the Minnesota Buffalo Association will hold its annual live buffalo auction; the only bison auction in the Upper Midwest.
