Beginning July 1, 2007, the Minnesota Certified Tree Inspector Program will be administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). At that time Mr. Ken Holman will take over leadership of this important program. Mr. Holman can be reached at 651-259-5300. All data records associated with this program will also be transferred to the DNR at that time.
Legislation passed this last year transfers Minnesota Statute 18G.16 Shade Tree Pest and Disease Control from Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) responsibility to DNR responsibility. We believe that this change makes good sense from a number of perspectives and that it will result in improved protection for Minnesota urban forests. The MDA will maintain lead authority and responsibility for detection and exclusion of invasive forest pests threatening the state such as emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, sudden oak death, Asian long horned beetle, etc., and therefore we will continue to work closely with each of you and the DNR. This change, however, better aligns DNR forestry expertise and existing municipal tree programs, such as the MN ReLeaf Grant Program, with municipal tree programs.
