The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is responsible for the development, promotion and evaluation of voluntary Best Management Practices (BMPs) for pesticide use.

NEW! April 23, 2012: The MDA Commissioner determined chlorpyrifos to be a surface water “pesticide of concern,” and proposes to develop and promote voluntary BMPs to prevent and minimize surface water resource degradation by chlorpyrifos.
 Water Quality Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Agricultural Herbicides
The MDA has adopted BMPs to address herbicide use and water resource protection. The BMPs are provided as a series of voluntary options. These practices can reduce herbicide leaching into groundwater, or runoff into surface water, with consideration given to the specific needs of farming operations.
BMPs for all agricultural herbicides and for the specific herbicides acetochlor, alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor and metribuzin are available. Educational posters are also available.
