  • New plants emerge from seed as rosettes

  • Numerous small pink-purple flowers on upper stems

  • Flower buds are small, tear drop-shaped, and lack spines

  • Stems are smooth and lack spines

  • Leaf edges are wavy/lobed with many spines

  • Reproduces by seeds and roots
