MDA to present customer research at Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association Conference

ST. PAUL, Minn.  – Farmers market managers and vendors from across Minnesota will be the first to hear the results of customer research conducted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Minnesota Grown Program. The new research will be presented at the Minnesota Farmers’ Market Association’s Spring Conference on March 21 in Waite Park.

During the summer of 2012, the Minnesota Grown Program conducted a customer survey at fifty-seven farmers markets throughout the state.  More than 1,100 customers participated in the survey and were asked questions such as “How did you hear about this market?” or “How often do you shop at this market?”

Minnesota Grown Program Coordinator Paul Hugunin says the market research collected by the survey will help growers better understand which services and products are most important to their customers.

“Learning more about their customers – such as how they use social media or how far they traveled to get to the market - will help market managers target their marketing resources,” said Hugunin.

In addition to hearing about the customer research study, conference participants will:

  • Learn the results of the SNAP and Market Bucks program at various farmers markets last year
  • Hear the details for the 2013 SNAP and Market Bucks program
  • Test the beta version of MFMA’s online Farmers Market Certification program
  • Learn the power of social media in promoting farmers markets
  • Provide input to the food sampling grant and learn about updated food sampling rules
  • Prepare their own crisis management plan for their farmers market
  • Receive an update on MFMA’s vendor and farmers market insurance program

MFMA’s Spring Conference will be held Thursday, March 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Waite Park and is open to the public. There is a registration discount for MFMA members and an early bird discount for registrations made before March 15th. Conference handouts, refreshments and lunch are included in the registration fees. Go to www.mfma.org for conference details and to register. Or contact Kathy Zeman, MFMA Operations Manager: kzeman@mfma.org or (320) 250-5087.
