Minnesota Christmas tree farmers market approximately 500,000 Christmas trees each year.
Real Christmas trees are grown on farms and are truly a renewable crop. For every tree harvested, Christmas tree farmers plant an average of 1-3 seedlings in its place.
It takes anywhere from 8-12 years for a real Christmas tree to grow to market height. During this time, farmers shear the trees for the proper shape, water young trees, and make sure the trees have the proper nutrients to grow.

The most popular Christmas tree varieties grown in Minnesota are the Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir and Scotch Pine.
Minnesota also grows traditional favorites like the Norway Pine, White Pine, Blue Spruce, Colorado Spruce, and White Spruce.
Many Minnesota Christmas tree farms now offer newer Christmas tree varieties like the Canaan Fir, Meyers Spruce and Korean Fir.

Each Minnesota Christmas tree farm has its own unique personality. Some offer a quiet, peaceful setting while others feature family activities like visits with Santa and sleigh rides.

Make a fresh cut. Cut at least one inch from the bottom of the trunk just before bringing it inside and putting it in the stand. This re-opens the tree stem so it can drink water.
Water immediately. After making the fresh cut, place the tree in a large capacity stand with warm water. The stand you use should hold at least one gallon of fresh water.
Place Christmas tree away from heat sources. Heat sources like heat registers, space heaters, fireplaces, etc. speed up evaporation and moisture loss of the tree.
Check water level daily. Do not allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut or the stem will reseal and be unable to drink. Christmas trees are very thirsty!
