Worker Protection Standard

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is responsible for the implementation and compliance monitoring of the federal Worker Protection Standard in Minnesota.

The Worker Protection Standard (WPS) is a regulation issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It covers pesticides that are used in the production of agricultural plants on farms, forest, nurseries and greenhouses. The WPS requires the employer to take steps to reduce the risk of employee exposure to pesticides.

If you are an agricultural pesticide user and/or employer of agricultural workers or pesticide handlers, the WPS requires you to provide to your employees:

  • information about exposure to pesticides,
  • protection against exposure to pesticide, and
  • ways to mitigate exposure to pesticides.
