When growing crops, there is going to be some loss of nitrate to the groundwater. In some areas, this loss can be high even when the nitrogen fertilizer best management practices are used. In these cases, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture encourages farmers to consider Alternative Management Tools, or AMTs. These are locally developed solutions for addressing nitrate problems. Farmers use AMTs on a site-specific basis.
