The MDA and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) renewed a Dairy Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on April 30, 2004. This MOU describes how the MDA and the MPCA will continue to work together and with stakeholders to ensure that timely environmental inspection and assistance with compliance achievement and permitting are available to Minnesota dairy producers. The MOU capitalizes on the already frequent presence of MDA Dairy Inspectors on dairy farms to help promote a better understanding among dairy producers of Minnesota's feedlot regulations and the resources available to assist them with achieving compliance. The MOU will continue to focus on education and outreach efforts geared to increase the awareness of State and Federal feedlot regulations and the availability of technical and financial resources for dairy producers in Minnesota.
Through the MOU, MDA Dairy Inspection staff have been trained by MPCA staff on different aspects of the Minnesota feedlot rules. This MOU has been important in assisting the MPCA with registering dairy farms in Minnesota. MDA Dairy Inspection staff distributed feedlot registration material to 1,657 dairy farmers located in counties who didn’t have a county feedlot staff person.
