As a livestock producer, you face many challenges - low commodity prices, global competition, biosecurity concerns, and increased regulation, to name a few. To be successful, you must develop strategies to overcome these challenges. Fortunately, today, there are many resources available to help you make informed, confident decisions and plan for the future of your livestock operation.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) developed The Minnesota Livestock Producers Feedlot Planning & Operations Manual to provide you with up-to-date, practical information on operating a feedlot in Minnesota. This manual was developed for all livestock producers, whether you are planning to update or expand your feedlot or are not planning any changes in the immediate future. This manual is intended to be a general information source for a wide variety of relevant topics, with guidance on where to look for more detailed information. It replaces the Manure Management Planning Guide for Livestock Operators that was published by MDA in 1995.
This manual was prepared by Earth Tech, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, under contract with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Significant contributions were made by staff of the Ag Marketing and Development Division of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Technical assistance was provided by the Feedlot Unit of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, University of Minnesota Extension staff, and Doris Mold with Sunrise Ag Associates. Additional input was provided by Minnesota livestock producers.
