State Disposal System (SDS) Permit


Permit Description: For facilities proposing to use new or different technologies, facilities where pollution hazards exist that were not fixed under an interim permit timeframe and feedlots with 1,000 or more animal units that are not Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs).

The table below outlines the requirements for SDS permits by animal unit category of feedlots and if an operation is considered a pasture:

Pasture or grazing with no open lots Not required
Less than 10 Required when owners of facilities are unable to fix a problem under an interim permit timeframe, or where new technology, construction, or operational methods are being used.
10 to 50 An SDS permit is required when owners of facilities are unable to fix a problem under an interim permit timeframe, or where new technology, construction, or operational methods are being used.
50-299 Required when owners of facilities are unable to fix a problem under an interim permit timeframe, or where new technology, construction, or operational methods are being used.
300-999 (existing feedlot) Required when owners of facilities are unable to fix a problem under an interim permit timeframe, or where new technology, construction, or operational methods are being used.
300-999 (expansion or new construction) Required when owners of facilities are unable to fix a problem under an interim permit timeframe, or where new technology, construction, or operational methods are being used.
1,000 or more Required if the feedlot is not considered a CAFO.
