Bovine Tuberculosis

Bovine TB is a respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis). A chronic, slowly progressive disease, bovine TB does not spread easily and may cause no symptoms in infected animals. M. bovis is related to M. tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB in humans.

Since the 2005 discovery of bovine TB in Minnesota, an ongoing investigation has identified 11 infected beef cattle herds and several infected whitetail deer in the northwest Minnesota counties of Beltrami and Roseau.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health is the lead state agency for combating this disease in Minnesota, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture plays an important supporting role by helping producers deal with the economic impacts of the disease. In effort to strengthen Minnesota's animal agricultural economy, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is dedicated to provide information that assists livestock producers affected by livestock disease and other threats. MDA has partnered and collaborated with many state and federal governmental agencies and research universities to help mitigate the negative impacts of these threats.
